Solomike Early Childhood Center (SECC) at Temple B’nai Torah (TBT) is committed to excellence and prioritizing the education and development of our children. SECC is a Jewish, Reggio Emilia-inspired school serving up to 76 students ranging in age from 6 weeks to 6 years of age. We seek a creative, passionate, and excited kitchen manager for our TBT and SECC kitchens.
Purpose: We are looking for an inspired and creative Kitchen Manager. Our ideal candidate has experience in a childcare kitchen setting and can lead others. The kitchen manager can collaborate with colleagues to sustain a prosperous environment and can effectively maintain a safe, sanitary, and organized workspace (including kitchens and pantries).
Responsibilities: 
  • Maintain full oversight of SECC and TBT’s kitchens including meal preparation, food distribution, and sanitation.
  • Create a healthy, constantly evolving, vegetarian, and Kosher-inspired menu for SECC that caters to students' dietary allergies and intolerances, while staying on budget
  • Prioritize the student’s health and safety including allergies, food intolerances, medical needs, and individual student plans. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of SECC’s philosophy and policies, parent and employee handbooks, Washington Administrative Code (WAC), USDA Food Guidelines, and other state and federal guidelines for early childhood.
  • Craft and deliver a nutritious, adventurous breakfast, lunch, and two snacks that are delivered to SECC students promptly, with proper portions.
  • Sustain up-to-date cleaning schedules and appliance upkeep, including proper sanitation when used for both SECC and TBT purposes.
  • Ensure kitchen areas and items are cleaned and stored after use.
  • Train and supervise others as necessary on the proper use of kitchen appliances, equipment and items.
  • Create and manage grocery and kitchen supply orders based on menus, inventory, and budget for SECC and TBT.
  • Proactively maintain the highest safety standards to prevent accidents and injuries. Be mindful of sharp objects, hot surfaces, hot liquids, and hazardous cleaning chemicals
  • Foster a collaborative environment that aligns with Jewish values including respect, kindness, and community for all.

  • Display strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively in a constructive manner with all suppliers, students, staff, and families.
  • Oversee all kitchen and food handling equipment and appliances, including coordinating with facilities staff for servicing of equipment and appliances.
  • The ability to work independently, collaborate with a team, and build and maintain supportive connections with parents, teachers, TBT staff, and leadership
  • Collaboratively delegate daily duties with kitchen staff and volunteers.
  • Accurately record daily kitchen logs
  • Participate in regularly scheduled weekly team meetings, monthly staff meetings, and quarterly in-service days
  • Oversee food preparation for TBT events.
  • Willingness and ability to step into a SECC classroom for ratio coverage in the event it is necessary.
  • Ability to pass a Background Check.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Reporting Relationships:
  • The kitchen manager reports directly to the SECC Director
Position Details 
  • Non-exempt, Full-Time position
  • 5-day (M-F) work week with availability during all site operation hours.  Flex time as needed to accommodate TBT events.
  • The salary is $26-$29 per hour, comparable with experience. Benefits are available for full-time employees.
Qualifications
  1. Education
    1. 2-year culinary degree or equivalent
    2. Must meet state requirements for training/education for the position.
    3. Ability to complete SafeGard STARS 30 hours and maintain an active Food Handlers Permit.
  2. Experience
    1. Must be at least 18 years of age
    2. Minimum 3 years of Commercial Kitchen Experience
    3. Childcare Kitchen Lead Experience strongly preferred
    4. At least one year of experience in meal planning and preparation, knowledge of early childhood nutrition, and experience working with groups of children.
  3. Physical and Mental Demands
    1. Must follow state, federal, and company guidelines regarding immunizations, required health/safety trainings, and practices for the positions
    2. Possess basic mathematical skills related to food preparation
    3. Maintain mental and physical alertness and an appropriate level of energy to perform essential job requirements.
    4. Must meet state requirements for training/education for the position
    5. Have the physical endurance to spend many hours standing, walking, and lifting heavy objects.
    6. Possess the aptitude to lift, carry, push, or pull objects including food trays, carts, materials, and supplies
    7. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate kitchen equipment
